The latest NPD data for February 2009 has hit PSU towers this morning, revealing that Sony’s PlayStation 3 console sold through approximately 276,000 units last month, topping analyst predictions in the process.

Despite not managing to outpace the Xbox 360 – which shifted 391,000 units during the same period – NPD’s Anita Frazier noted that Sony’s console experienced the most significant month-over-month increase in units out of any other platform.

In related news, PlayStation 2 sold through 131,000 units, with PlayStation Portable narrowly missing out on the 200,000 sales mark. Unsurprisingly, Wii trumped the whole lot, shifting 753,000 units.

Given that Killzone 2 released on the tail end of last month, we expect March NPD figures to reflect a stronger uptake of Sony’s black behemoth.

  • PlayStation 2 - 131K
  • PlayStation 3 -276K
  • PSP - 199K
  • Xbox 360 - 391K
  • Wii - 753K
  • Nintendo DS - 588K

360 continues to massively outsell PS3 every month. This will just keep on happening until Sony does a price drop.

What they fail to mention is last year in February the PS3 sold more than this year. So while the numbers aren't bad, they aren't improving like everyone said they would. Especially with Killzone 2 just released, and all the exclusives that have come out in the last year, I feel sales should be higher.

Wel atleast ps3 is doing well in japan. I don't really care about sells. Aslong as bad sells doesn't interfere with my gaming. Like AAaaaAa PS3 DIES, NO SUPPORT FOR IT ANYMORE, GO TO PLAY YOUR PS2. Then i'd start to worry about sales.

I agree with  #5. My best friend has one, but my other friends are waiting for a price drop.  One of my friends bought  a Xbox because he got tired of waiting for a price drop for the PS3. But he's not happy now since he got the Red ring of death, and only had it for 4 months.

My ps3 was worth every penny.  I'm glad I bought it an I'm tired of hearing everyone bullsh! about "drop the price".  Its a wonderful console, the best this generation period.  If you ain't willing to spend the money on a quality console then buy a wii and enjoy it for a week of replayability.

At this point I see people just want excuses to NOT buy the ps3..

"360 continues to massively outsell PS3 every month..."

PS3 sales are amazing considering it's double and more than double the cheap-60 version, honestly.  Sony knows they can jump to the top of the charts at anytime with a price drop

And here's the elephant in the room...What's up with the 360's lack of exclusives?  They are more excited about multiplats nowadays (Street Fighter 4) than Halo Wars.  Meanwhile, I'm playing MLB 09 The Show, Killzone 2, Resistance 2, and Valkria Chronicles right now.  I'll get to SF4 eventually.  THAT's what those new PS3 owners see (and some of them already have 360's).

Word is out.  If you want the varied games, you need a PS3.  All the other people are just people buying $200 360's because it's cheap, their friends have them and dont know any better.  And the Wii?  Don't get me started on their shovelware.  The Wii-60 sales are indicative of how many casual gamers are buying systems.

I don't understand why people buy the ps2 when you can get ps3 for better graphics. PEOPLE SOON THEY GOING TO STOP MAKING GAMES FOR PS2 SOONER THAN U THINK.  I understand about u want the price drop, but sony want their money. ps3 been out for while now, they need drop the price, and soon they will stop making games for ps2 soon, becuase they need full focus on ps3 & psp now. I hate to hurt u people feeling but it the truth.

Even though the xbox out sold Sony in Feb,Sony still made more money and Im only talking about the PS3,you can do the math!

And @11 The PS2 is still a great console with alot of great games, its not only about the graphics if you are a true gamer you will know this but I doubt it,why would Sony stop making the PS2 if they can still make money out of it,it doesn't make sense and besides, not every one can afford a PS3,even with a price cut!

I agree with some of the people here. Sony really needs to drop their price. I figured they would drop it around the time Killzone 2 came out. Just imagine a price drop and Killzone 2 bundled.

I aslo think they should start to bundle either the official headset or the official keyboard. :p

Sales don't matter to me. I just want good games, and seeing as how I've spent the last three months playing Valkyria Chronicles, Disgaea 3, and now RE5 I would say my ps3 is getting miles in. It's just too bad that Left 4 Dead isn't on the ps3 as well. It would have saved me an extra $20 to re-up my XBL account

What people need to understand is if they are getting a PS3, they are not only getting the most powerful console on the market which also has a great list of games and exclusives but also a great Sony Blu-Ray player and Internet Browser, DVD Player, Music + Photo +Video File Player all in one machine..........it's worth it!!

    • 1:27pm GMT - March 20th, 2009

My 2 cents on this issue:

    • The PS3 was forced to have BluRay and the cell didn't work out for graphics, so they quickly (1 year) formed a deal with Nvidia.  This raised the cost of the machine to a very high level.
    • Home has taken a considerable amount of resources away from other things like backward compatablility.
    • Sony used the PS3 to force BluRay as the defacto standard.  They won

In my opinion Sony is cool with comming in 3rd this generation. They probably only care about breaking even on the PS3 at this point and they have enough sales to survive this generation.  They have enough exclusives to make people happy and their sales will be better than the game cube.

Having said this, I do expect some price cut from both Sony AND Micrsoft before Christmas of this year.  I expect to see a gimped version of the 360 for $150 and a PS3 for $300.  I don't expect to see anything before September in a price drop though.  Sony did what they wanted to do and they probably hoped for better sales but at this point they won the format war.  My guess is that Sony will learn from this mistake and the PS4 will be nothing more than a PS3 1.5

I'd like to know how many 360s sold each month:

    a. are bought to replace dead systems and

    b. end up running copied games.

Because I don't see huge differences in numbers of multi-platform game sales.

@20 Can't agree with most of that & tell me what would be left if you gimped a 360?! There's nothing to gimp, it's as basic as it gets.

PSU, if you use the words 'Sony’s black behemoth' one more time I WILL EXPLODE!

    it´s exactly the same numbers

of February 2008. So i think it´s not bad at all at this price !

Imagine when they cut the price. It will sell

like 360 is doing right now.

no God not again, that little box of crap is really selling well, plus look at the sales of that retarded pathetic excuse for a console which is called the"wii",but i guess the ps3 didnt reach it`s ultimate potential in february, there will be another time

@21. I agree, i would love to know how many of the xbox sales are replacements, also i'd love to know how many of the people have gone and bought a bluray player as well, would be interesting to see if people are forking out the same money or even more to buy both the xbox and then a bluray player rather than just buying a ps3. I do also think sony will reduce the cost of the PS3 as some point but after losing 3 billion dollars last year i can understand them not wanting to lose a fortune and not knowing if it will get it back in software sales. I would imagine the must make something also when every bluray disk is sold but not sure. Would love to know on that one.
