Game of the Month: July 2009

In this notoriously slow period in the gaming calendar, as developers busily iron out kinks in their games and publishers sharpen their pencils ready for the media onslaught in the four month lead up to the busy holiday period, there’s only been two contenders that could have received July’s Game of the Month accolade.
Fight Night Round 4 impressed us with its re-written gameplay engine, introduction of heavyweight fighters and superb legacy mode, but for the first time in PSU history we're awarding Game of the Month to a PSN game and a title that screams quality compared to many of the downloadable games on offer.
Offering great value for money and endless entertainment, DICE Studio's Battlefield 1943 has set the benchmark for future PSN shooters and thus is the deserved winner of PSU's Game of the Month award for July.

This is what some of our forum members had to say about Battlefield 1943:
"This is definetely one of my favourite PSN Games alongside Flower and Quest For Booty.
Anyone who likes online shooters should buy this" - TheSorrow_101
"THIS GAME IS AMAZING! I have been looking for a cheap game to just sit down and play for a while. I played the demo for this and was hooked. Then I went to check the price and bought it on the spot. It is hard to get sick of. 9/10 is about right." - PTearGriffin0123
"This is the action I've always been wanting to see on an online game. The epic battle scales are incredible, planes swooping by dropping bombs while a tank is downing your friends and their forced to take cover and enemy boats are just arriving on shore. You literally feel like your fighting for your life."- RoBBsz
"God I am so addicted to this game at the moment. For me it has to be the best title to appear on the Playstation Store, but like the review says, it could do with a some more maps, but I dare say they'll release more for it in the future. I just hope they don't take too long!" - chilledbreeze7

The request for more maps was answered shortly after release with the introduction of Coral Sea and there’s more content planned for the future. Battlefield 1943 is one of our favorite PSN games to date and has a strong community that should ensure that the servers will be full for a long time to come. We summed Battlefield 1943 up in our review by saying:
"Great looking locations and expertly designed maps, a well-balanced weapon set, destructible environments and an excellent squad command system await those who download this gem of a title."

@3 just because its "game of the month" don't mean you should rush out and get it. Its their opinion although I hear good things about it some like it and some don't, like Sufi he has a gripe with it....

@5. It's true that no game out there has well-balanced guns...someone will always find an exploit that makes that certain gun better than the rest.
Problem here is that since you only have ONE choice for a gun...if you hate it, that class is useless for you.
I play BF:BC and I hated the specialist class but once I unlocked the UMP that gives you more range with a sub-machine gun, it made that class better for me.
They shouldn't restrict guns, I liked their decision to restrict classes but having one gun is ridiculous. The game is still fun though, no doubt. It is good for the money but i will warn you that it will feel incomplete due to having one gun each class. A game like Fat Princess will seem more complete because they're not watering it down to become a PSN game at that price.
BF 1943 would've been a better game at $20 with a lot more guns and maybe maps.
@6 I would still say that it's a good game. It will definitely give you about a month. But it doesn't have the longevity as much as it should.

@4 In my opinion there are a few games that are better than this one on the PSN, this doesn't even make my top five. It's getting lots of hype right now because it's whats new but that doesn't make it a great game it's just an ok shooter. We will see if it has staying power after November I mean that is the litmus test isn't it?

Cool, PSU used my comment.PSU FTW! : ) Anyways, I agree that BF:1943 should use more weapons and have more maps for a least $20.00 like Sufi said. But oddly enough I am completely satisfied with BF:1943, there's something about it that keeps me coming back for more, something so addicting...Maybe it's the fact the battle can be altered due to constant bombs and tank missles destroying you every hope for cover.Or the epic battle scales and the extremely beautiful graphics . I don't know. But yeah BF:1943 deserves GOTM, I hardly play any other game now.

@9
I agree with you that it would've been better for 20 bucks, if it had more weapons and maps and all that. But the game is PERFECT for its price. I'm sure the servers will give us more maps and all that. And when you said that it will lose hype after november...DUDE!!! Seriously? Of course it will with all the great retail games coming out! But it doesn't mean people will stop playing it! BF:BC is old but its online servers are still busy...

i would love to download and enjoy this gem but I just cant do that with games with unbalanced weapons.. if everyone uses the same weapon its just pointless really..

I played the demo, thought it rocked, so I bought it... It's easily worth 15 bucks. I want fat princess too now, but I'm starting school and I don't really think I have the time for it BattleField, Deadspace (which I'm borrowing), my other games I usually play, and life. So I'll just wait till Uncharted 2 comes out and buy that :).

There was never any doubt it would be brilliant , for me Battlefield series is the best thing in my 30 years of gaming .
I really hope with the success of this little BF they may release another 2 featuring another 8 maps from the legend that is 1942 .
I would love a North African themed pack using the original maps El Alamein , Gazala , Tobruk and Operation Aberdeen with the Brits and Anzacs battleing against the Italians and Jerries .
I have over 26 games (on ps3) and the only ones that I have played more than 1943 is Bad Company and COD4 , that really says something for a PSN game thats only been out about 3 weeks and is only a mini game .
