Some PS3 games may lack Trophy support in 09

While reviewing the dismal first person shooter Shellshock 2: Blood Trails this week, it came to our attention that the horror sequel didn't feature Trophy support, something that we thought was mandatory in all games released in 2009.

Searching around the net for the definitive answer, we discovered plenty of debate about the subject, with quite a few people assuming, like we did, that Sony Computer Entertainment had ruled that all games must feature Trophy support this year.

To clear the issue up and get clarification on the matter, we contacted SCE who confirmed that Trophy support is only mandatory in titles that were submitted for certification after January 1, 2009. According to the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC,) Shellshock 2: Blood Trails was classified in June 2008, so it was at the developer's discretion whether it included Trophy support or not. It's unlikely that this particular game will sell well, so it's also very improbable that it will ever receive the feature.

It's worth checking then the official date of certification with the ESRB or BBFC before you buy or rent a game if you're simply hoping to improve your Trophy tally. You may be disappointed otherwise. Many of the games that we'll see in 2009 were submitted before January 1st, so Trophy-less titles this year are still a possibility. It's not really going to be an issue with any of the major titles, but games from smaller studios may still be affected.

Then there's a possiblibity that they'll get no consumer support either.

i dont mind trophies but i think its to much of a focus. i dont care for trophies in killzone 2 cos its not why im playing it nor the other games i have. i think ms and its crappy achievements became to much of a 'must have' but lets face it, achievement points in ms IS the currency you use to buy crap, ps3 trophies are just an addon as it doesnt matter towards purchases etc.

    @ InfiniteRetro,
You obviously have no clue how Achievements work on the Xbox 360. You do NOT use them to purchase items. They are an add-on, exactly like PS3 Trophies.

Thankfully this just clarifies what most people already thought was the case regarding 08/09 games. It shouldn't be long before the 08 classified titles are all released and out of the way.

I should expect that even with some of the games that were classified last year, the developers will realize that a lack of trophy support could potentially be pretty harmful to the sales of their product, and quickly get wise to patching their games. It's not too much for the average customer to ask for, after all.

Some people have different takes on trophy support, I for one think it gives that certain game a better replay value to achieve that goal. Some people dont really care for it which is ok, but trophy support shouldn't be a priority, having various updates for the PS3 such as in game chat should be one of their top priorities

Trophies would mean a lot more if Sony were to add a system where people can trade their trophies for clothes or other items in HOME. I wish this would be added some day.

If it's limited to games like SS then were ok. All 3 of the people who are gonna play SS will be disappointed. FYI: The games title (in this article) is listed as a banned word if I try to put it in these comments?!

I dont know how hard it is to put trophies in the game. When multiplatform, trophies end up being obtained the same way as the xbox360 achievements. Really how hard can it be? Tho trophies are not the reason why i buy a game still it adds replay value. It gives you the sense of progression every time you play a game

Trophies aren't THAT great. I've played Assassin's Creed, MGS4, Resistance: FoM, and some others which don't have any trophies. I don't see how they possibly add to the enjoyment. You buy a game for fun, not for the trophies. No PS2 game had them, and what? There were legends, like God of War and Kingdom Hearts, or the Final Fantasy titles. Nobody cared, everyone enjoyed the games.

Just wanted to point out that Classification of a game is not the same as submittion for certification.  They do happen relatively close to each other as they both need a finished version of the game ( sometimes a buggier version is sent to classification ).

Getting approved is the last step just before submitting to mass duplication ( which takes a minimum of 3 weeks ).

All in all, I'm just trying to say that you can expect trophies to be in 95% of the game released THIS month, and 100 % afterwards.  Hope this helps.

@6...again i repeat you are a blabbering i.d.i.o.t. you don't use achievement point to purchase stuff on XBLM. WTF are you talking about? @7 yea your absolutely right, trophies are the same in PS3 are they are on X360...they add replay value, for some gamers help them get their moneys worth & as for me as just fun to obtain...serve as bragging rights if you will, its also cool to compare your stats with other gamers. @10 so if someone who owned an X360 told you that the X360 grows an organic dong out of the disc tray you'd believe him? gullible, ignorant ps3 fan-boy you are.

I would think that poor sales would be an even bigger reason to include trophy support for those that actually are hunting for them. those people are probably the only ones that will buy the game.

I was also told by a 36* owner that achievment points can earn you things, but he told me it was things like extra days on your gold account or themes, but not actually for live arcade games or things that really matter.

I'm seriously wondering who thought otherwise. The news about mandatory trophy support for games submitted after 01/01 was revealed a couple months ago. I read it on here, as a matter of fact. And to be honest, i dig trophies, but the lack thereof will never be a deciding factor on whether I buy a game or not.

I have a 360 and a PS3 and rarely touch my 360.  When trophy support was announced I was like great... now Sony copying Microsoft (usually it's Microsoft copying Sony)...  I never thought the achievement system was that great, however it did make users want to play the game over and over just to get 100% completion.  Then Sony launched trophy system and I saw it and was like wow there are actually more reason to collect these trophies.  It's not just a point system but a leveling system as well.  I love how in depth the system is and I'm almost level 8.  I have call of duty 5 plat trophy, almost have uncharted plat trophy (just have been lazy about getting it), and will have grand theft auto 4 plat trophy soon too.

What is dissapointing is that this system was implemented until after the ps3 launched.  It should have been a feature out of the box so we had trophies with every single game.

    mmmmm...too bad....

i love trophies  cause they add more replay to the game and its like an invitation to be a better gamer cause u read for example: to unlock this tropy kill 20 enemies without dying and then: i can do this lets see......tatan new trophy......

this is my personal opinion anyway :D

PD: i really hope that almost all the games of this year count with this support :/

    • 3:26pm GMT - February 18th, 2009

Wow, pull your heads out Sony. In reality, I don't even care about trophy's anymore, because nobody else I know has a PS3, and the support for this feature is so spotty, that it really doesn't even matter. I like my gamerscore/acheivements on my 360, and it's kind of a friendly competition between me and my friends. The PS3 will never have that because it's been 2 years and they still can't get it right. The 360 and it's games supported it's acheivements since day 1. I also thought that Trophies were supposed to tie into home somehow, and unlocking some trophies unlocked things in home? Guess they gave up on that.

Their bad, I believe there will be more people buying the game if there is Trophy support. But me, personally don´t give a rats a*ss if there is trophies. Maybe a little, if it´s implementet in a smart way like in WipeOut HD.

at #30. i completely agree with you. a lot of the trophies challenge u to do things u normally wouldnt think or care to do. but when u do it and get that 'tada'. you feel all warm and gooey inside. i got over 500 trophies and alot of games ive played longer then i normally would because it challenges me to do extra things.

I agree, where the **** are the MGS4 trophies? Of all the games to be missing it... And what happened to that awesome Single Player DLC for MGS4 that Ryan Payton was talking about? He said it was top secret and we'd all be blown away. Anyway, I love trophies and it makes me want to replay games to death. For instance Uncharted was a great game but if it wasn't for that trophy patch it would probably be collecting dust. When the patch came out it made the game seem new again, and I actually put down some of my brand new games to replay Uncharted. A lot of developers should be smart and update older games with trophy support, it would boost sales. Like Force Unleashed and Assassin's Creed, I would pick them up if they had trophy support, as opposed to just renting them.

Throphys ARE achievments you've gain in some games, but if you don't feel like "achieving" anything then it's ok. As long as play the game for fun and not for prestige then i guess that's enough for you.
